TTC to install counterfeit detectors at the fare box.
The Toronto Transit Commission doesn't want to take chances on fake passes and tokens, so it's beefing up security at the fare box before counterfeiting becomes a bigger problem.
The TTC is installing new counterfeit metropass and token detectors on every fare box, from subway stations, to buses, to streetcars.
Recently, metropasses were set up with holograms and magnetic strips as "new" security features.
The TTC, however, says give a copy-cat enough time and they'll crack the secret.
The commission is spending $1.5 million, and hopes to have the new counterfeit detectors in place by early next year.
The new devices will look a lot like an ordinary metropass readers, but will sound an alert to the driver or fare collector if a fake token or metropass is detected.
