Just a little over an hour after the NewsTalk 1010 mayoral debate wrapped up Wednesday evening, the studio phone lines blew up. We wanted to get your response to a question that was posed to the main mayoral contenders: What's the combined income required for a family of four, including two teenagers, to live comfortably in Toronto?
Most listeners think Olivia Chow seriously low-balled the figure at $60,000. But callers and responses on the text board varied wildly, ranging from $30,000 to $200,000. Clearly, few of us share the same meaning of the term "comfortable."
I took a lot of heat – I'm talking scorching, fire-breathing vitriol – for suggesting that a family of four could save a lot of money yet still live comfortably by ditching the car(s). Many contributors (and my co-host, Barb) pelted me with questions; it was like bottles being thrown at the town menace.
