Another reason to feel guilty with every swipe

If you thought you were doing your local baker or butcher a favour just by patronizing their establishment, you're wrong.

I often don't mind paying a slight premium to buy from neighbourhood businesses. These shops are what help define our communities. But my latest trip to the butcher came with a request in the form of a little sticker beside the cash register. It advertised something called "Credit Free Friday." I immediately knew what was behind the campaign, but I also immediately wanted to go online to find out how they’re going to sell this to consumers.

On, the Canadian Federation of Independent Business insist they're saving us from ourselves. "Excessive use of credit cards, especially premium credit cards, contributes to escalating consumer debt," the site reads. But that's certainly not the case if you're one of the millions of Canadians who credit cards responsibly.
