Agar's Declaration of Human Responsibilities

Posted By: Jerry Agar · 5/22/2012 7:09:00 AM

We have a Universal Declaration of Human Rights and a Charter of Rights and Freedoms, but we lack a Canadian Declaration of human responsibilities.

I did find some declarations of human responsibilities, but those were just a rehash of the declaration of rights, basically boiling down to saying everyone has to follow the declaration of rights.

People are big on rights, but on responsibilities, not so much.

So here is mine, hopefully as a helpful suggestion, the Jerry Agar Declaration of Human Responsibilities;

Every person has the responsibility to ensure that their children attend school and study until they graduate high school.

Every person has the responsibility to avoid pregnancy until he and she are in a financial position to raise and care for a child. To do less is child abuse.

Every person has the responsibility to take care with their lives that they do not become addicted to drugs and alcohol, and if they do, to take the steps necessary to get clean and sober, so as not be a burden.

Every person has the responsibility to provide for themselves and their dependants as much as possible, even if this means doing work the person deems undesirable.

All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, therefore every person has the responsibility to treat others with respect and dignity, which includes not attacking or maligning other people’s initiative, effort and success with undue income transfer schemes.

All have the right of freedom to worship or not, and the responsibility to respect other’s decisions in that regard and get over it.

Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference. Everyone has the responsibility to live with the discomfort that causes.

If the people protesting in the streets today spent even half as much time thinking about their responsibilities as they do scrawling slogans on cardboard to declare their greedy desires, we would immediately live in a better world.

While I agree with most of your statement, the point about taking care to avoid becoming an addict is a bit absurd. Nobody chooses to become an addict and a lot of it has to do with their mental state. It's like saying everybody has the responsibility not to be mentally challenged. It's not a choice and I guarantee you that just about every addict did not choose to become addicted to whatever substance they're addicted to.

The other point with your statement about addicts that doesn't make sense is "so as not to be a burden." What about smokers? They willing choose to smoke yet they become a burden to the system. Why should they not be listed in your responsibilities declaration? The same could be said for people that don't wear sunscreen. Do you take care to ensure that you have sunscreen on each and every time you step out into the sun? If not, you're a burden waiting to happen. Let's not forget about obese people - "Every person has the responsibility to maintain a healthy weight , and if they do become obese, take steps to reduce their weight, so as not to be a burden to the system." I think you see where I'm going with this...

@Sean Did you ever hear the expression "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure"? That's Jerry's point, I think. And it's a good one, given our overburdened healthcare system.

While I would tend to agree that surely nobody chooses to become an addict, at least right off the bat, you cannot deny that for every addict, there was an initial choice to use whatever that person ultimately became addicted to. And each successive use of the substance was also a choice. Gradually it became more and more difficult to make the choice not to use, but it was always a choice.

It's overdue that someone come out with a list like this, far too many people are out there making irresponsible decisions that only make life difficult for the rest of us. I say we start sending this list to every member of Parliament!

Only one suggestion I'd add: Redefine the definition of the Declaration and Charter of Rights to be a Delcaration and a Charter of PRIVELIGES, to be awarded to people who meet their responsibilities.

While Jerry's Declaration is fine for the citizenry what about the responsibilities of the corporate elite? I am not one to oft quote Spider Man but from that franchise we have the quote "With great power there must also come great responsibility." With this in mind here is my first draft of The Responsibilities of the Wealthy.

Every wealthy person has a responsibility to give back to the society from which their wealth was derived.

Every wealthy person has a responsibility to respect our democratic processes and not attempt to subvert them or unduly influence them.

Every wealthy person has a responsibility to not use their wealth to compete unfairly in the marketplace.

Every wealthy person has a responsibility, like all of us, to live up to their mistakes and not use their wealth to avoid such responsibility.

Every wealthy person has a responsibility to respect not just the letter but the spirt of the law and thus not try to "buy justice," engage in SLAP's, or attempt to financially exhaust opponents.

Every wealthy person has a responsibility to respect the environment, human rights and social justice and not view such things as anethma to their well-being.

Every wealthy person who owns a media outlet has a responsibility to report on the news fairly, objectively and not villify any particular segment of society.

I like this Delarlation a lot. And what a wonderful world that would be. You might even call it UTOPIA.

But this world, as we know it has far too many rules & rights and nowhere near enough responsibiliities. Which is why it is self destructing as we speak. Because we're turning every sound principle of life... into political rhetoric.

It's just a matter of time before the 3 R's ... Rights, Rules, Reponsibilities won't matter because there won't be anyone to follow or enforce them.

Seems to me a while back you wrote a blog about having a baby an no job while in Chicago. Broke one of your own commandments there I think.

All human beings are not born equal. Where did you get that crap from. A child born in the Sudan or living in Homs is not equal to a child living in Deer Park or Leaside.

You can worship anywhere you want right now. That includes the Arayan Nation churches. It cuts both ways.

Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference. Everyone has the responsibility to live with the discomfort that causes. What does this mean. Are still smarting over the spanking JM gave you on air.

You never cease to amaze with simple simplistic systems Jerry. Keep em flying.

Yup I could have written that Jerry.
    Bang on.
It's all about being responsible and mature enough to accept your own decisions.
Now I am a 56 year young boomer around your age I think so I was taught old school from my parents who came from Holland after WW2 where times really were tough for many years during the war and before.
I have had nothing handed to me and my wife and I have had tough financial times for many years since we did decide to raise our own kids and along the way pretty much teach them the same rules you write above.
The PC liberal socialist and now marxist crowds coming out of our society now as in the 60's makes me want turn cars over in the parking lot.
You speak for me and wife in most areas Jerry so keep rockin.....

Geez Agar gets tiring. He's a teabagger who pushes his views on us through this declaration. He lived in the US and saluted the American Constitution like a religion. So he comes back here and pushes his rwnj idealogies. This station should dump this guy asap like they often did in the US.
