When did we lose the belief that we have to look after ourselves?

I bet you can’t count the number of times you have heard someone brag about how their family came to this country with nothing, never asked for a dime, worked their immigrant butts off to make something of themselves. Or it’s a single mom working, raising kids, putting them through university. Sometimes there are tears of pride, and deservedly so.

We don’t want to do that anymore.

Now we want someone else to pick up the slack created by the unequal weight of our pull on the desire end of the rope versus the accountability end.

    That's a pretty provocative stat you quote about tax revenues as a percent of GDP nudging to 50%!! Mind sharing your source for this information?

      @Bigdaddy7777 I'll save Agar the embarrassment of acknowledging his quote regarding tax revenues as a % GDP in Canada is nudging towards 50% was unfounded and lacked any credibility.

      In a report on the OECD website (that's the Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development, Jerry), it's estimated that in 2010, Canada's tax revenues as a % of GDP was 31%!!

      Nice piece of journalism, Jerry!

      It's interesting to note that this compares favourably against both Germany (36.3%) and the UK (35%) as well as against a number of other countries.

      In the US, where Agar rails against the notion of tax increases, tax revenues as a % of GDP is estimated at 24.8% for 2010. You telling me they don't have the capacity to address some of their debt load with tax increases.

      Agar continues to misrepresent fact with impunity.

      @Bigdaddy7777 Jerrry loves to play fast and loose with facts.

      1) Ehealth was started by the Harris Government, called Smart Systems, the name was changed and the $600 Million blown is included in the $900 Million total cost. And there is a E Health system so it was not a total waste.
      2) ORNGE was started by the conservatives, and there are more conservative involved in its formation and governance than liberals
      3) There is no billion dollars lost on relocating power plants, CFRB just reported its 180 million, a mistake yes but not a billion.

      Cant wait for Jerry apologies for distorting the record.

    The problem is not people paying their own way. It is the 1% taking all the money leaving nothing for the middle class. You can not argue that income distribution has changed dramatically over the last 20 years. Maybe more and more people see this and become nihilistic.

    Northern Europeans have civilization figured out, we should copy them. If Canada had the same goverment as Norway we would be the richest people per capita not Qtar.

    The comment that eHealth and ORNGE were started under Harris has been on here a few times, so let's get that straight.

    eHealth Ontario was created in September 2008, and was a a scandal under Smitherman.

    The air ambulance system was started in 1977, but the operation that has received the criticism and is under investigation now was due to changes that were the responsibility of McGuinty and Smitherman. That is what is being reviewed now.
