Violence is a symptom of society gone wrong

Posted By: Jerry Agar · 8/1/2012 8:49:00 AM

"A society's first line of defense is not the law but customs, traditions and moral values." So says Walter Williams in an excellent column on the ways society has devolved over his long lifetime.

The problems we have with violence in the streets will not be changed by more laws and gun bans. Police on the streets will help and I applaud Police Chief Blair for doing so. But he fighting a losing battle if we don't change society.

Here is Williams' column.

Wow. Incredibly poignant. It's not only fear of retribution or assault that keeps adults from confronting teens, it's fear of legal action. My back yard faces a playground and soccer pitch. One day my wife was in the back yard while I was at work and saw some kids vandalizing a picnic table (tossing it around etc.). She told them to stop and they cursed and swore at her. She told me about it when I got home and said she'd wished I was there. I said "Why? What can I do these days? Go yell at them and have them swear back and possibly assault me?" If I had to defend myself I would surely be brought up on charges. Our policies and programs put in place to protect children from situations have now placed them above reproach. And society is the worse for it.

"the inmates are running the asylum" probably best describes the way our society has trended. the reason we have more police is due to the business of charging anyone and everyone for the slightest wrong, while the big issues are avoided. then the courts get busy dealing with these inconsequential matters and we need more court staff, lawyers, judges, etc. then the serious cases get delayed because so much time is wasted on non-issues that the police either don't have the common sense to deal with or are not permitted to do so.

if you're a cop there's lots of leeway available, something no longer available to ordinary citizens.

I have never loved Jerry Agar’s program as the one today, and trust me I am all on ankles with him regarding the crime and kids in this city, but had he only carried this discussion at a half pace he is going after blacks and they are societal failures, I would already had a lunch with him. And I’m not going to write allot, only two points on this issue.

1} When I came into this country, my children were bullied for they were responding to their teachers with yes sir and yes mom. It became very complicated that we were called to school and we faced a 21 year old then social worker than wondered if these kids are abused and if they are we can easily loose them. As new immigrants we started to shake our heads on how this developed country brings up children, and we saw the danger we are walked into. 2012 the seeds are starting to show in The Eaton center and all over the place. Parents can never be the kids and kids can never be the parents. Now through Agar’s program we have reached this level of understanding, how do we put this into reality and bring up kids as kids? That is the question for you today.

2} Jerry thank you for getting the strength to raise this issue, you have created very many enemies for much of them are making a killing through wasted kids, find a day and follow this up with how can we change and what have we done that is wrong? We are in a society that prefers to state that all is alright and it is immigrants that are poor parents and let us deport these kids out of Toronto. They fail to question what part they have played in creating these kids that have been born and grown up here.

On record, I am not so worried about Husbands, but the 8 and 9 year olds I see out here, worry the heart out of me, trust me we need to raise up and retake our children back or we will run out of this city when we are senior citizens.

The headline is correct but the anaylis is way off. In Austria at the main train station the newspapers and magazines are laid on a table, there is a jar of money so the customer can make his own change, there is no one attending the table on a constant basis. The newspaper boxes are similar, a bag full of money to make change and take a paper. The reason this exists is because the government has for generation strove to make a healthy society. A big compnet of this is heavy socialism. No one is poor. Every mother gets 3 years maternity leave paid. Every child gets $1,500 a month allowance tax free. University is free for all.

Is it any wonder no one comes forward to report a crime, even when the crime is committed against themselves,if the perpetrator, he or she,{mostly He],is caught that person will end up in many cases serving 5 to 7 years for murder, so where does that leave the informant ?.If a serious crime was ever committed against a close family member of mine, it is now up to me to take care of it.
