The suddena and untimely passing of Jim Flaherty has me thinking about the idea of putting off the things we intend to do some day.

Flaherty died suddenly only days after stepping down from public service with plans to enjoy more time with his family and to explore possibilities in the private sector. Neither will happen.

Years ago, just after 9-11 I met a man who had been at work in his office in one of the twin towers in New York. After the plane had hit the building he ran down the stairs, past the firefighters going the other direction.

I asked him whether the experience had changed his life. Here is what he told me.

I had a wine refridgerator in my apartment, stocked with fine wines I would show off to people. The wine sat in the fridge on display. Had I died, I would be gone ...
