Why does Ford get a pass?
I was walking home from the station this morning when a guy on a souped up bike ripped past me on the sidewalk while wearing headphones. He went on to narrowly miss a blind woman walking up Yonge street. "A-hole!" I said out loud. But then I thought, "maybe he's really busy".
I know Rob Ford's most devoted fans will forgive him anything and the haters will make hay out of everything but all those people making excuses for the mayor reading while driving....give me a break.
The first excuse is "well what about the guy who took the picture?" First of all, several accounts say he was a passenger but even if he was driving while snapping a picture of Rob Ford driving while reading, try that argument on your mother and you know what she would say.
Next we're told "everybody does this". Again, try that one on your mother. More importantly, a lot of us don't do it. I don't do anything else while driving because I don't want to end up like that guy on the 401 this morning who drove up under an 18 wheeler. And that's if you set aside the fact that you not only have to worry about killing yourself but also other people.
For those who think there is nothing worth noting about the mayor driving and reading let me ask you something: what was your view of the TTC driver who was driving and texting? What is your reaction when you are behind someone at a stop light who continues to sit there after the light has changed because he's talking on the phone? What's your first thought when someone comes whizzing toward you on a bike on the side walk?
And for those who keep insisting that the mayor is being hounded....you can't take a picture of a guy behaving recklessly, if he's not behaving recklessly.
