Mr Mulcair comes calling
Opposition leader Thomas Mulcair was in town today for Jim Flaherty’s funeral and took some extra time this morning to drop in studio to chat. Mulcair and I have known each other for a long time from back in my days in Montreal so I am no stranger to him, but this was the first time he has paid us a visit since taking over the NDP. I will be curious to hear what you have to say but I wasn't the only member of the morning crew to find him affable, thoughtful and by no means unworthy of thinking of himself as a potential prime minister. You can hear the full conversation here.
Mulcair is an interesting fellow. As he explained this morning he's an NDPer at heart but signed on with the Quebec Liberals because they don't have a provincial NDP. He's an experienced public official, a very intelligent man and not as prone to the label of "angry" as his opponents would have us believe. His cross examination of the Prime Minister on the Duffy affair has been masterful and his patience with having to sometimes play second fiddle to Justin and his caucus is worthy of praise.
We have a year and a half to the next election. Which is plenty of time to get to know Mulcair better.
