We're only dog sitting

He's the cutest puppy in the world but he's not ours. We're puppy sitting for our friends Brian and DJ. Joey is a 13 week old Westie and he's still learning. Twitter averse listeners asked for some snaps so here they are. We have some pretty specific ideas about puppy rearing so to paraphrase from an ad that runs on NewsTalk: "You give us your puppy, we'll give you back a new one".

For the record, we have every intention of getting another dog but the timing isn't right at the moment. And while I'm quite enamoured of Joey, my experience is that Westies have very deep inner lives which isn't what we're looking for in a breed.

TO ALL: Adopt from a shelter. Adopted "dawgs" or "mutts" as some call them tend to have fewer health problems. You can actually get unlicensed purebreds from a shelter too.

We've always adopted our pets and have never been disappointed, always very affectionate and grateful animals. The shelters will let you walk them if that's all you want to do, the dogs love it.

I've had four schipperkes over the past 25 years. The breed is hardy, but all of the ones I've had have been one person dogs. I got three of the four dogs from rescue groups; they all had issues. With lots of love and a firm hand, they came around. Eventually. Good luck with your search for another dog. You'll know when the time is right.
