LCBO; Drunk with Power

It isn't often that I hear about an issue making headlines, and automatically advocate for a scorched earth policy.

Ontario's Liquor Control Board and their recent labour woes, happen to be that issue.

 Earlier this week, unionized workers at Ontario’s booze monopoly voted overwhelmingly in favor of a strike.

 LCBO employees voted 95 per cent for job action if ongoing contract talks break down with the provincial retailer. 

Amongst the issues of contention in the contract negotiations is a plan to impose a four-year wage freeze on the 7,000 unionized members.

A move the membership feels is "out of line". And a move that the cash strapped Ontario government feels they have little choice but to implement.

So while we are on the issue of things that are out of line, let me share a few things I can't seem to wrap my head around.

How much more accommodation is reasonable?

A Parti Québécois minister says it's time to remove special parking perks for members of Montreal's Jewish Orthodox community. For years, parking signs in the city have been covered to accommodate residents unable to move their cars for street sweeping over a high holiday.

The minister is tasked with developing the province's secularism charter, so he is no stranger to controversy surrounding religion. That said, his argument that accommodating one religion requires us to accommodate all is a valid one.

A former PC candidate in Ontario (and current talk-show host) made a similar argument. John Tory pledged to extend religious educational funding beyond the Catholic boards. It marked his defeat. But why?

It may come as a surprise to some that Toronto city council operates around some Jewish holidays and adjourns early when meetings fall on Yom Kippur. Should council not consider similar provisions if counsellors or staff of other ...

Ryan Doyle joined NEWSTALK 1010 as an intern after graduating from Humber College in 1996.  He quickly climbed the radio ladder to become one of NEWSTALK 1010's night time hell raisers. As an award winning producer, commentator and host Ryan has reported on some of the biggest events in recent history, including the one year and five anniversary of 9/11 in New York and the inauguration of President Barack Obama in Washington DC. 

Doyle currently co-hosts NEWSTALK 1010’s nightly show Friendly Fire with John Downs and is a featured commentator on the Sun News Network. Always honest and never afraid to drop the gloves, Ryan Doyle brings a fresh approach to the issues of the day and, alongside his co host John Downs, is changing the way Ontario listens to evening radio.

John Downs has been an award-winning radio reporter and personality in news and talk radio in Toronto since 1998, primarily covering Toronto City Hall. His individual work has been recognized by the Radio and Television News Directors Association of Canada, including the Sam Ross Award for Best National Commentary in 2007.

He is currently co-hosting Friendly Fire alongside Ryan Doyle in the evenings 7pm – 10pm on NEWSTALK 1010. Prior to joining NEWSTALK 1010 Downs hosted the John Downs Show, a news-based talk program on CFMJ AM640 in Toronto.  Some of Downs' higher profile assignments have included, SARS, blackouts, pope-wrangling, and most recently, rubber bullet dodging at G20 protests.
