City promises careful approval of road closing events during Pan Am Games

Some events will be approved but only those far from venues and major Games routes say staff

Another summer weekend in Toronto means another weekend full of road closures.

The upcoming July 19/20 weekend will see a number of closures including partial shutdowns on Lake Shore Blvd., Bloor St., Danforth Ave., St. Clair Ave., and Dundas.

At this time next year the Pan Am Games will be underway, with some predicting traffic chaos.

That got us at Newstalk 1010 wondering...how does the city plan to handle these weekend events closing roads during the Pan Am Games?

City officials tells Newstalk 1010 some festivals will be approved but only if the road closures take place away from the venues and major highways that will have special Pan Am HOV lanes to move athletes, coaches, and officials during the more than two week event starting July 10, 2015.

"These festivals mean a lot of money for some of these businesses over the summer months," says Councillor and chair of the Public Works and Infrastructure Committee Denzil Minnan-Wong. "We have to balance out the interests of moving traffic but also having some level of concern and protect those businesses."

Other events taking place during the Pan Am Games will be encouraged to change dates.

"We will be looking at each of the events as they come in," says GM of Transportation Services Stephen Buckley. "We're trying to encourage those that typical schedule during this window to see if they can move their events to different weekends, either before or after."

The Honda Indy, taking place this weekend, will not be held when the Pan Am Games are underway, a decision made deliberately because of the expected impact on those trying to get around along the lake.

The city will be doing more construction work before the event and after the Games on routes near venues and major highways to try and cut down on congestion, including fully opening up the Gardiner Expressway.
