It did not take long to catch one.
Ontario Provincial Police set up a RIDE check point in Mississauga on Friday night in an effort to weed out drivers impaired by alcohol and drugs.
OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt says the very first driver to pull up to the checkpoint was impaired.
Dozens of drivers were hit with a combined 104 charges from Friday night through to Monday morning.
"I don't want to say (it's) about typical, but we do see these kinds of numbers on weekends from time to time," Schmidt tells NEWSTALK 1010. "People just don't seem to be getting the message and realizing that they're impaired."
Schmidt says some impaired drivers were caught in RIDE checkpoints, stopped after other drivers reported erratic behaviour to 911 or when they crashed into something or someone else.
A woman has been killed, her three-month-old son in critical condition after their vehicle was hit Sunday night by a suspected impaired driver outside Kitchener.
York Regional Police say arrested 20 people were charged with drinking and driving over the weekend. 12 of them were nabbed by officers on patrol or in RIDE checks, five spotted by other drivers and three were involved with crashes.
Police say one driver was caught after driving around a barricade at Aurora's Santa Claus Parade early on Saturday night. They allege the car was littered with empty cooler bottles and that at local police station that the driver blew more than twice the legal limit.
Durham Regional Police say they charged 27 people with drinking and driving offences stemming from RIDE checkpoints this weekend.
