A video game led to a big night out for an 11-year-old Saturday.
OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt says police received calls about an erratic driver on the northbound 400 near Major Mackenzie Drive just before midnight.
Schmidt said "Drivers called it in thinking it was probably an impaired driver because the vehicle was all over the highway."
The vehicle exited the highway at King Road then spun around to go southbound on the 400 refusing to stop for police.
"What happened is the vehicle was first going under the speed limit, about half the speed limit. Then switches over to the other lanes, continues to travel accelerating to well over the speed limit, 120 or more kilometres per hour. The vehicle then stopped and as the officer tried to get out and talk to this driver, find out what was going on it looked like the driver was young, the vehicle took off again,” he said.
More officers got involved and they were finally able to get the vehicle to stop safely without causing a crash.
It was then police discovered the driver was an 11-year-old boy.
He told officers he had just finished playing 'Grand Theft Auto' at home and wanted to find out what it was like to drive a car.
"That was incredibly dangerous." Schmidt said, "That could have been a fatality and that would have been an absolute tragedy."
The boy was returned to his parents a short time after the vehicle was stopped.
