A 16-year-old Lindsay, Ont., girl is dead after the snowmobile she was riding on fell through the ice on a central Ontario lake.
Provincial police say two snowmobiles, each carrying two people, were travelling on Lake Scugog around 10:30 p.m. Thursday.
They say the lead snowmobile drove into open water while the second managed to stop.
Investigators say the second pair was able to assist the driver of the first snowmobile from the water, but attempts to rescue his female passenger were unsuccessful.
They say the body of Sarah Lumsden was located a short time later and transported to hospital where she was pronounced dead.
The boy was taken to hospital, and his condition is not known.
