Was street racing to blame for a serious collision on the Gardiner Expressway overnight that sent three people to hospital.
The incident occurred in the westbound lanes of the Gardiner near Park Lawn Road Saturday night.
According to Const. Dave Hopkinson, speaking to NEWSTALK 1010 Sunday morning, two vehicles may have been involved in an illegal street race.
One of them reportedly hit the guardrail before both vehicles took off.
But a third vehicle ended up crashing into a post at or near the time of the street racing, although Hopkinson can't confirm if it was as a result of the two speeding cars.
"These are only reports currently and we are investigating it. We do have some information that this is what happened, but it's not been confirmed."
What is clear according to Hopkinson, the three people in that vehicle suffered injuries and were taken to hospital.
"We had one passenger in the rear of the car trapped inside the car and two other passengers hurt. The rear passenger with life-threatening injuries."
The incident forced a full closure of the westbound Gardiner between Park Lawn Road and Islington Avenue, but that stretch of the expressway has since reopened.
Hopkinson also disclosed that during the closure of the Gardiner, Police arrested another driver, who drove into the accident scene, on suspicion of impairment.
Police are asking for the public's assistance about the cars that sped away.
Anyone who may have been in the area or has dash cam video is asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
