Some 31% of commercial vehicles pulled over by York Regional Police in a two-day blitz were pulled off the road because they were unsafe.
A number of other police services across southern Ontario as well as the Ministry of Transportation participated in the crackdown.
363 commercial vehicles were stopped in Vaughan on Monday and Tuesday. 112 of them were found not to be road worthy. 343 charges were laid for a variety of offences including insecure loads, improper tires and braking systems.
York Regional Police const. Laura Nicolle says they are pretty consistent with past efforts.
"Each year that I can recall us doing this blitz, we've had about the same numbers," Nicolle told NEWSTALK 1010 Friday.
Nicolle could say what might help reduce the number of vehicles needing to be pulled from the road.
"I think it's one of those things that we have to consistently be very agressive in our efforts and we have to also reach those drivers and reach those businesses to encourage them to take that extra time to do thorough inspections."
