New standards for trucking schools in Ontario take effect on Canada Day but so far 10 percent have yet to make the mandatory changes.
CTV News reports that 70 schools are ready for the new rules but approximately 12 are not.
The provincial government announced the changes last year, unveiling mandatory entry-level training standards. Starting July 1st, new truck drivers will be required to take an approved course at a provincially licensed school before they can take their road test. They'll also be required to spend over 100 hours in training.
Previously, getting a Class A licence did not require any formal training.
Critics worry the government will let the lagging schools off the hook.
Transportation Minister Steven Del Duca tells CTV, "I don't want to put anybody who is behaving in good faith out of business...so it's about finding the right balance."
However, Del Duca says he currently has no plans to extend the deadline.
