A Toronto woman is ready to roll up her sleeve to help develop a vaccine against COVID-19--twice.
Cecie Elnicki says she was contacted by Manna Research and asked to participate in studies of two potential vaccines; one being developed somewhere in Canada, the other in the U.S.
"This is a sign of hope to me, that they're actually doing testing. So I was only glad to say yes," Elnicki tells NEWSTALK 1010's Moore in the Morning.
Elnicki was already in Manna's database, having participated in two clinical trials for protections related to C.difficile, shingles, and the flu coordinated by the Toronto-based firm before.
Elnicki says she was told she'd be called upon for testing in June or July. It is not clear if she will be able to participate in testing of both vaccines or only one.
Based on the other trials she participated in, Elnicki is not concerned about any potential side effects from being injected with an in-development vaccine.
"I don't think they're going to give me something that's going to kill me," Elnicki said.
She doesn't see participating in the studies as brave or noble.
"I look on it as furthering medical information," Elnicki said.
Participants in clinical trials like this one are paid. Payments very depending on the kind of study being undertaken.
