There's been a twist in the legal saga of an accused terrorist in Scarborough.
Rehab Dughmosh was slated to appear in court today on a slew of charges that include 14 related to terrorism but refused to leave her jail cell and face the judge.
The's accused of launching an alleged attack with a golf club and knife inside a Canadian Tire store last month, yelling about ISIS.
During previous court appearances she has reiterated her allegiance to the Islamic State and has vowed more violence, if released. Dughmosh has also refused to acknowledge the Canadian justice system, get a lawyer.
In light of today's no-show, Judge Kimberley Crosbie issued a warrant.
Federal Crown prosecutor Howard Piafsky says that doesn't mean Dughmosh will appear for her next court date on August 18. "It's intended to retain jurisdiction over her so that the court has the ability to order her to come on the next proceeding. Whether she comes or not is, really, a matter of her purview, it's something that she may decide."
It's not overly surprising that Dughmosh refused to come to court. During her last appearance she said she never wanted to come back and indicated she wants to plead guilty. Because of her announced intentions, Judge Crosbie also appointed an amicus.
Federal Crown prosecutor Howard Piafsky explains the amicus won't represent Dughmosh, but rather act as a friend of the court. "She's not represented by counsel, she's advised the court she doesn't intend to retain counsel. This is just a way to ensure her rights are protected and that the court proceedings are conducted in a fair and effective way."
