It happens to sports stadiums and arenas all the time - name changes - but it doesn't mean it's not difficult to get used to. Many of us still refer to the Rogers Centre as SkyDome more than 13 years after the stadium's moniker was changed.
But as of Sunday, the era of the "Air Canada Centre" is over, as the venue officially becomes the Scotiabank Arena. Announced in August 2017, Scotiabank purchased a 20-year naming rights deal to take effect on Canada Day 2018.
Among the changes we can expect, signage will become larger more prominent both inside and outside the building, according to an Urban Toronto report.
Maple Leafs Square will also get a makeover. The large screen that is currently centred on the west side of the building will be replaced with an even larger model.
The venue first opened in early 1999, with the Toronto Maple Leafs moving from Maple Leaf Gardens and the young Toronto Raptors leaving their first home at the SkyDome to come play in their brand new home at Lake Shore and Bay.
Since the ACC's opening, Toronto's South Core has seen drastic changes with the addition of dozens of new office buildings and condominium towers.
