A new report suggests Ottawa will create a new statutory holiday to recognize the impact of Canada's residential school system.
According to the Globe and Mail, the federal government is working on the new holiday, possibly called the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
The new report suggests this new holiday is going to be adopted eventually with politicians just trying to decide on a date.
Once this is official, it will apply to employees in federally regulated workplaces and then it would be up to the provinces to give everyone else the day off.
Over 150, 000 Indigenous Canadians were removed from their communities and forced to attend the schools.
The belief was that that they would be best set up for success by leaving old traditions behind and adopting new Canadian customs.
