Toronto Police have laid a charge of first-degree murder in connection with a horrifying public shooting across from the CNE over Labour Day weekend.
Michael Lewis was killed at Coronation Park September 2 while his nine-year-old daughter, six-year-old son and pregnant girlfriend were close by.
The family had been at a memorial for Kamal Hercules, a friend murdered with a gun in 2009.
Police have charged Andrew Douglas with first-degree murder in Lewis' death.
The arrest was made Thursday with help from Toronto Police's guns and gangs unit.
Spokesperson const. Jenifferjit Sidhu could not say if Douglas has a gang affiliation, only that "he has had dealings with police in the past".
Sidhu could not expand on what those dealings were.
Investigators are looking into whether Lewis knew his alleged killer.
They are also exploring whether there is any link between Lewis' murder, the memorial and Hercules' death.
Hercules, a youth worker, was shot dead outside a grocery store near Front St E and Sherbourne St early on September 5, 2009.
Fayisa Ahmed Ibrahim was charged the following spring and convicted of first-degree murder in 2013.
Lewis' sisters can't understand why someone would want to kill their brother.
In a conversation with NEWSTALK 1010's sister station CTV Toronto just after his murder, they described their brother as a hard-working, devoted dad with a "Colgate smile".
Upon learning that police had made an arrest, they said they're relieved, but it doesn't change the family's heartache.
"It's not gonna bring our brother back, but my parents, for them, it's a little bit of a closure, because now they can face this person. They can see how many lives they've impacted by their one senseless action."
"This person's off the street. They can't hurt anybody else. Nobody has to experience the trauma that we went through."
