The innocent victim of a brazen ice pick attack on board a TTC subway car this week has lost vision in one eye after the weapon punctured his brain.
Toronto Police today revealed more information about the assault which happened on a train at College subway station around 12:40pm Monday.
It's believed a 60-year-old man was sitting on the train when another man, wielding an ice pick, approached him and started stabbing him.
A Transit Enforcement Officer soon identified who they believed to be responsible for the stabbing, and apprehended him after a short chase and "violent struggle".
The victim was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
"The icepick actually penetrated his brain," Constable David Hopkinson told NEWSTALK 1010.
"I believe he has lost sight in one eye ... I don't know if that's temporary or permanent."
Police believe the incident happened on a southbound train, and the man collapsed on the platform of the station when the train stopped.
They also say, at this stage, it appears the attack was random.
"Everything that we have been told indicates that this was an unprovoked, random attack," Hopkinson says.
Thomas Sommerville, 27, of Toronto, has been arrested and faces aggravated assault and dangerous weapon possession charges.
He made a first appearance in court at Old City Hall on Tuesday, February 13th.
