It's an idea at Toronto city hall that wasn't allowed to hatch five years ago, but now it's back.
Councillors will vote today on whether to allow backyard chickens in parts of the city.
They will debate whether to launch a pilot project that would allow residents of four wards, Etobicoke-Lakeshore, High Park, Forest Hill, and the Beaches areas, to keep the farm animals in their backyards.
Chickens are legal in other big cities, like Vancouver and Montreal.
"It's all about food sustainability," says Justin Di Ciano, one of the four councillors bringing the issue to the council meeting. "There's lots of benefits. You're getting organic eggs, there's lots to learn from it."
The motion asks staff to come back with a report in a couple of months, outlining a framework on how a pilot project would be rolled out.
Di Ciano says staff would determine how many chickens would be allowed per household, but he expects it would be fewer than five.
He says they would also need a recommendation on what residents would do with the chickens in the cold, winter months.
Councillors will also vote on updating the list of prohibited animals in the city, to include penguins, flamingoes and cranes.
