Outdoor ice skating is a winter pastime in Canada but one Burlington man learned the hard way, you can't just build a rink in your backyard.
Nick Radojevic spoke to NEWSTALK 1010's Jim Richards on the Showgram.
He says he and his brother-in-law had started building a backyard rink for his children in early November, when a Burlington city inspector paid a visit.
Radojevic says he was told the city received an anonymous tip and that he needed a building permit for the rink.
That permit took about six weeks to come through.
"It's been over $700 just for the paperwork and the approvals from the city," Radojevic says.
He learned that a permit is required for anything over 100 square feet in size and that he'll need a new one to build a rink next year.
Radojevic says, if he decides to do it again, "I'd probably start the process off in the summer, in June or July."
