When you go to Toronto City Hall, you're going to notice something a little different.
Security guards are set up at three baggage screening tables; one in the back entrance of the building and one, each, at the inside entrances to the east and west towers.
"Security guards are looking for prohibited items. A list of the prohibited items is on the city's website and there is also a sign at each screening area. Prohibited items include weapons, (imitation or real) noise makers like bullhorns or anything that may jeopardize public safety. Exceptions to that are religious or ceremonial items," explains Dwaine Nichol the head of corporate security.
The screening locations aren't set in stone, though. "The screening locations can change due to the time of day, whether we're under enhanced security level, or if we get advice from law enforcement," he says.
City Council approved the enhance security measures in June.
"Many areas you come into the building: Service Canada, the library, the cafeteria, ticket counters you can go without screening," Nichol says. "Baggage screening is required for some areas on the main floor; also, to access any of the tower floors or the second floor committee rooms, offices of elected officials, etc."
A walk-through metal detector will be in place for the first council meeting of the new year. Anyone wanting to enter council chambers will be searched.
