The Toronto Police Services Board has given the green light to a request by the Chief, for an extra $30 million.
The extra money will push the budget for 2019, up over a billion dollars, at $1.029 billion.
"We want to make absolutely certain that we are putting the resources in place, uniformed and otherwise, that will keep our community safe." said Toronto Mayor John Tory.
The added funds will be used to bolster the staffing levels at Toronto Police, which have been erroded because of a hiring freeze, and retirements and departures in the last several years.
As a matter of fact, staffing levels have dropped 9% at the service since 2016.
This new money will be used to hire 300 new front-line officers, along with 185 special constables and 122 part-time retirees.
The latter two positions will be used to take some of the load off officers.
"They'll perform some of the duties that might have previously been performed by people in the police service itself." says Tory.
Keep in mind too, that the Toronto Police Association has just started negotiations on a new contract.
The budget was passed by the board, but the debate doesn't end here.
It will now go to general council, who will vote on the issue in March.
