Ontario is reporting 712 new cases of COVID-19 in the province, which marks a decrease compared to yesterday. It's also the fourth straight day we've seen the daily case totals under 800. Today's total is below the seven-day average of 779.
Of the new cases, 213 are in Toronto, Peel Region had 135 new infections and York Region is reporting 62 new cases. Including Ottawa, the three "hot spots" of the province, make up 64% of the new cases.
54% of the new cases came in people who are 40 or younger. Comparatively, 14% of the new cases came in people who are 60 and older, which is the most at-risk age group.
Nine new deaths have been reported for the second time this week. One of those deaths came in the 40-59 age group, the first time in weeks that has happened. The other eight deaths are in people 80 or older.
More than 38,500 tests were completed marking the fifth straight day we've failed to process more than 40 thousand tests in one day. The number of cases under investigation continues to rise, and is now at more than 37,000.
The number of active cases, or people currently infected with COVID-19 is down slightly to 5,873, with the majority of those in Toronto.
Looking at the numbers of people in hospital, it's up eight to 261, the highest level since June 25th. The number of people in ICU is at 67, which is an increase of five, and those needing a ventilator is at 36, also an increase of five.
Health officials have indicated that when we see 150 people in the ICU, capacity will start to be stretched thin.
