Health officials are reporting 538 new cases of COVID-19 in Ontario today, marking a slight drop compared to yesterday. It's also slightly higher than the seven-day average of 517 new cases per day.
Nearly half of the new cases came in Toronto, who identified 229 new cases. That's actually fewer than the 288 reported yesterday. Adding it all up, 72% of the new infections were in the GTA, with Peel reporting 101 new cases, York Region reporting 43 and Durham Region reporting 14 new cases.
Three new deaths have been reported, with all three coming in the 80+ age group.
Health officials are reporting 60% of the new cases are in people 40 and younger, however 14% of the new infections are in the most at-risk age group of 60+. That number is a little higher than yesterday.
The number of active cases is up slightly, with 4,975 people currently infected with COVID-19. Almost 2,000 of them are in Toronto. 30% of the active cases are in people 20-29 years old, with only 12% of them in the age group of 60+.
When it comes to testing almost 40,000 tests were completed, but the number of people waiting on results is now up to more than 82,000. 1.3% of all tests yesterday came back positive, which is a slight decrease from yesterday.
The number of people in hospital increased by 12 to 162, while the number of people in ICU is up one to 36. The number of people on ventilators stayed the same at 17.
The last time we had nearly this many active cases in the province was April 29th, and then we had 977 people in hospital and 235 people in ICU.
