Before the end of this year, Eglinton East will likely be home to almost nine kilometres of bus-only lanes.
Toronto Mayor John Tory made the announcement on Wednesday at the corner of Eglinton and Cedar in Scarborough.
The plan is just a proposal for now, until city council approves the fast-tracking of it, but it was first introduced at the TTC board meeting in December.
The Eglinton corridor is just one of six identified by the city and the TTC. The bus-only lanes will take up existing HOV lanes and curbside pull-outs along the road.
Work on the project is expected to be complete by November.
The lanes would run from Brimley Road to the University of Toronto's Scarborough campus.
All in, costs are pegged at about $7.8 million, but the City and the TTC project long-term savings each year by reducing capital and operational costs.
