You see little libraries all over the city, adding character to neighbourhoods.
They're about the size of a mailbox and encourage people to take a book, leave a book.
One of them in the area of Roselawn and Avenue was threatened this week when a family was given a bylaw notice to get rid of theirs or face a fine of $100.
That didn't go over so well once word spread on social media which has led to a cheerful conclusion.
The little mint green box on it's wooden post with stencilled gold letters letting you know it's "George's Library" will stay put.
Councillor Christina Carmichael Greb says the removal notice should never have been issued. "I think the bylaw officer felt the houses are in close proximity and if someone was backing out of their driveway there might be an issue because it's right next to the sidewalk. I was at the location, I looked at the picture, I didn't see any."
The bylaw officer was acting on a complaint made about sightline issues.
She now wants to find a way to avoid this in the future. "They benefit the community, they're great to have in neighbourhoods, they keep people reading and reading things they may not have read before. I will be putting forward a motion asking staff to look at how we can make little libraries permitted encroachments on people's front lawns."
