It's been four years since Canada Post last bumped up the price of stamps, but another increase is just around the corner.
The crown corporation has announced a proposed hike of five cents for domestic lettermail weighing 30 grams or less, starting on January 14, 2019.
This means that for stamps purchased in a booklet, the price of each will jump from $0.85 to $0.90. Stamps that are bought individually will rise from $1.00 to $1.05.
Canada Post says the hike will end up costing the average Canadian household under a dollar more per year, while businesses are likely to have to fork out an additional $14.00 each year.
A government release states that the crown corporation needs to strike the correct balance between the need for an increase in revenue and ensuring it still provides good value to people who rely on physical mail.
The release adds that those wanting to avoid the higher price can purchase permanent stamps anytime up to the day the hike takes place.
There are also proposals to increase other rates - including those for other domestic lettermail and items being sent to the United States. Those will be announced at a later date.
