The planning committee at City Hall made a change to proposed short-term rental rules Wednesday.
Regulations are being designed to cater for the rise of companies like Airbnb.
One of the hot topics has been what are classified as "secondary suites".
They're essentially self-contained apartments that have their own entrance, kitchen and bathroom.
Initially, they would've been allowed to be rented through Airbnb but the committee voted unanimously against the proposal -- in an effort to preserve housing stock.
Those who pushed for the amendment argued secondary suites should be available for long-term renters.
Airbnb, and hosts who use the site, said renting out their self-contained apartment was a good way to make money when friends and family weren't using it.
The move to take secondary suites out of the proposal mirrors what has been done in Vancouver.
That city brought in its own rules this week, and left secondary suites out of the short-term rental equation.
The entire proposal still has to go before Council to be debated and voted on.
