When there's a major event going on in downtown Toronto, would closing one of the major highways in and out of the city be a good idea?
"We realize there's that there's probably not a good time to close the Don Valley Parkway to do maintenance work," says Mark Mills, the manager of road operations and maintenance with the city of Toronto.
But that's exactly what's happening this weekend.
Keep in mind, the Toronto Raptors will be playing game six of their Eastern Conference final series against Milwaukee at the Scotiabank Arena. Also, the Toronto Blue Jays are at home to the San Diego Padres.
Surely, the city is going to change their minds, knowing what's going on?
Nope.
Mills says a project of this scope and size takes weeks and even months to prepare, with contracts and schedules to worry about.
But there is one thing that may derail this weekend maintenance: mother nature.
"We would typicially look at Friday's forecast and if it looks like rain for Saturday, we would probably cancel it for this weekend," says Mills. The project would then likely be rescheduled for sometime in Setpember.
The TTC had planned a closure for Line 1 this weekend, closing down a section from St Clair to Union, but that has been scratched, instead workers will open the line later on Sunday morning to accomodate the work.
