It could soon become easier for you to rent out your basement.
City planners are recommending new rules that will allow homeowners to create secondary suites in all new and existing homes in the city.
It would end the patchwork of rules that currently exist.
For example, currently, if you have a townhouse downtown you can legal build a secondary suite. That's not the case in the suburbs.
One landlord tells CBC News the change may help increase the number of rental options in the city.
About 70,000 people in Toronto live in these units but many are technically illegal.
In the 20 years since secondary units were first allowed, only 2,000 applications have been made.
