When an arena in North York was converted into a temorary homeless shelter in May, neighbours weren't happy.
At the time, the city was dealing with a shortage of spaces, and since the Don Mills Civitan Arena at the corner of Don Mills and Eglinton, had no summer programs, the move made financial sense.
But it was never intended to be long term.
Originally, the city had planned to move the occupants and close the sheler doors at the end of July. That's now been moved up a week to July 25th.
That's because the winter programing, and organization to turn it back into a hockey rink, needs to start happening.
A second site that was opened in early June, the Lampton Arena, will be closing at the end of August or early September.
There's nothing to say that the same won't happen again next spring, but the city is looking for new respite sites, elsewhere in the city.
"We're looking for four, before the winter comes." says Pat Anderson from the city's shelter division.
City Council gave the city around $14 million to keep the 24 hour respite centres open from mid-April to the end of December.
