After a fatal accident on Hwy 48 near Sutton last week, area residents and safety advocates are raising concerns.
Two men were killed and three people were injured after a multi-vehicle crash near a construction zone on Thursday.
Police are still investigating the cause, but the OPP says that it looks like several vehicles were stopped at the construction zone, waiting to be let through, when at least one vehicle didn't stop in time.
Five vehicles were involved, including three trucks, an SUV and a commercial cube van.
NEWSTALK 1010 listener and area resident Steve Green says one issue is that you can't easily spot the construction flagmen telling drivers to stop, especially when you go over a crest in the area.
"To me, the flagman should be on the opposite side of the road, so the driver three or four cars back knows there's a guy there flagging traffic," he says.
He is also calling on the province to add a stoplight in the area to slow people down.
Brian Patterson with the Ontario Safety League says one way to make construction zones safer is by putting up temporary lights to stop cars, instead of a flagman.
But to Patterson, the issue is not with the construction, engineering or police enforcement. He says it's about a driver either speeding or being distracted, or both.
"I really think that drivers need to understand that when you're behind the wheel, your whole focus is on driving," Patterson says. "I think that a couple of seconds of distraction created a lot of that damage."
