City councillors have voted 11 to 24 against renaming Centennial Park football stadium in Etobicoke after former mayor Rob Ford.
It was an idea brought forth by Mayor John Tory, honouring the wishes of the Ford family.
"Mayor Ford had his supporters, those who felt heard and represented and helped by him," Tory told council. "I believe very strongly that the divisive era of city politics in Toronto is now over...That is why I erred on the side of generosity in bringing this proposal forward."
Councillor Jon Burnside was the only one to stand up and speak against the motion.
"I think the question is actually bigger than one person," Burnside said. "We need to shift our focus and do more to recognize every day citizens; people who have volunteered hours, days, years of their lives to make our city better."
Notably absent from the vote, was Rob Ford's nephew, councillor Michael Ford.
Councillors also voted in favour of recognizing Deputy Mayor Pam McConnell and Councillor Ron Moeser.
