Nicholas and Mark Mahabir - the brothers charged in connection with the death of a Mississauga teenager - both appeared in a Brampton courtroom on Christmas Eve day, and have been scheduled to re-appear on later dates.
The body of 14-year-old Riley Driver-Martin was found on the morning of December 7 in an area that serves as the school yard for an elementary school, École élémentaire Horizon Jeunesse. His body showed obvious signs of trauma.
That evening, Peel Police arrested 20-year-old Nicholas Mahabir and charged him with second-degree murder. His brother, 20-year-old Mark, turned himself into police the following evening after a Canada-wide warrant had been issued for his arrest on the same charge.
Mark was the first to make a court appearance Monday morning. According to our media partner CP24, he was dressed in a grey jumpsuit with his hair slicked back. Driver-Martin's family members also attended - many of whom left the courtroom in tears.
Nicholas appeared later in the day, just after 2 p.m., wearing an orange jumpsuit with his long hair down. None of Driver-Martin's relatives were present for the second appearance.
Mark's case has been put over until January 9, while Nicholas' case is being put over to January 7.
Driver-Martin was a student at Clarkson Secondary School, which is located close to where his body was found.
Police have not released any details about a possible motive for the killing.
The Mahabir brothers in this case are two of three fraternal triplets.
