A stretch of Canada's busiest highway was closed in Durham Region today after a wild crash that sent some unsuspecting commuters to hospital.
Around 7 a.m. in the collector lanes west of Whites, a car came out of nowhere to slam into up to six vehicles.
According to the OPP, a man was driving south on Altona Road. He passed by Kingston Road and slammed through a barrier at the end of a dead end street.
Then the driver continued on down a ravine and launched through a hill and a line of trees to emerged out of the woods on the 401 and hit drivers who were headed west.

It's not clear why the driver never stopped. Police have not confirmed if this was an impaired driver, a mechanical failure, medical episode, or if another factor could have contributed.
The man's vehicle rolled over during the crash but he walked away with relatively minor injuries.
Two people went to hospital with serious injuries and they were not riding in the car that lost control.
At this point, no charges have been laid.
