Just over a year after Toronto city council voted to make bike lanes on Bloor St. a permanent part of the commute, there are new calls to extend those lanes west.
Cycle Toronto wants leaders at city hall to get in gear and approve a 3.5km expansion of the Bloor St. bike lanes from near Ossington to High Park.
The group claims the data the city has collected over the past year shows that the Bloor bike lanes are one of the busiest cycling routes in North America.
The lanes have provided almost a million rides from February of last year, to February of this year.
City research released in late 2017 shows that the same route is traveled by some 20,000 vehicles each month.
Councillor Ana Bailao says she would support expanding the Bloor St. bike lanes, arguing that the project has reduced collsions since the lanes were reconfigured.
While studies of the impact of stretching the bike lanes to High Park has already been ordered at city hall, Bailao warns that there isn't likely to be a report ready for councillors to vote on until some time next year.
