Crowds of people gathered to support each other and express their grief - and resilience - Monday evening, less than 24 hours after a gunman took to the streets, killing two people and injuring 13 others.
First, hundreds attended a vigil at Calvary Church, on Pape just north of the Danforth. Services were led by Pastor Daniel Winter, who said he knew what he was up against - trying to explain the unexplainable.
"In my understanding, there is a presence of evil in the world, that I believe that one day, will be defeated," he said. "I think the toughest question is why."
Shortly after the vigil, patios along the Danforth were packed, restaurants were bustling and sidewalks were jammed. A memorial wall began to grow, while the words "Danforth Strong" were spraypainted across a piece of plywood, and messages of love and resilience were left by hundreds of passerbys.
Vula - whose family has a restaurant on the Danforth - told NEWSTALK1010 she was born and raised along the street. The gunman - now identified as 29-year-old Faisal Hussain - walked right past the restaurant while he was shooting, Sunday evening.
She set up the memorial wall, because she said she felt she needed to do something to help.
"We have to show support, and we need to keep strong for the Danforth - and not let anyone take us down," she said.
Another woman, Evadna, said it's about honouring those who were killed while standing up and staying strong.
"I want them to know that this happened, but we don't want to be afraid."
