Canada's top crime official declined to say whether or not he supports a planned Indigenous healing lodge in his Scarborough riding... which has faced some opposition.
The Thunder Women Healing Lodge is slated to be built on Kingston Road and Cliffside Drive, a six-storey facility with programming, a store and beds for Indigenous women in the justice system.
While proponents of the plan say it'll give the women the specific supports they need, opponents have expressed concern over possible crime, proximity to schools and limited parking.
It's in the riding of Minister of Organized Crime Reduction Bill Blair and when asked by NEWSTALK1010 if he support it, said that he only approves the process between residents and the city.
Blair said supportive housing plays an Important role for Indigenous women, but that planning for these types of spaces have to be done well.
One of the other concerns from residents was that they weren't properly informed.. which led to the formal application of it to the city being delayed.
But since being approved by a city committee in one of the first steps towards getting built, there have been no formal appeals.
