A man is fighting for his life in hospital after a flying wheel struck the vehicle he was driving.
The accident happened on Highway 400 northbound, near highway 89 around 11:30 this morning.
Newstalk1010 has learned that the wheel detached from a white SUV that was heading southbound.
OPP
The wheel crossed into northbound traffic and struck the windshield of the northbound vehicle.
The victim in the northbound vehicle was trapped and had to be freed by firefighters.
"Right now, the information we have is that he has major injuries to his head and to his internal organs."
The opp is still investigating. OPP Sergeant Krunoslav Marunic spoke to our sister station CP24.
"Once we arrived on scene, we found that the vehicle that had struck the tire was pulled over on the shoulder. It had collapsed the roof of the car that struck it, trapping the driver in his driver's seat. With the assistance of fire and EMS, the driver was extracted and taken by air ambulance to Sunnybrook."
A female passenger in the vehicle suffered minor injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital.
Investigators are speaking with the SUV driver. The OPP says that drugs or alcohol were not factors in this accident. There's no word whether charges will be laid.
Anyone with dashcam video is asked to contact police.

All lanes were closed to traffic in both directions as Ornge air ambulance arrived. Then two northbound lanes were closed for some time as ground-level emergency crews were on scene. After major delays for long weekend commuters, the highway was fully reopened to traffic a couple hours later.
