There's word from city hall on Wednesday that road crews will do regular Fall maintenance work overnight, instead of sealing off the Gardiner Expressway for a whole weekend.
Mayor John Tory says Toronto's Transportation Department is making changes to its Expressway upkeep program.
That means the work will be done across 4 overnights next month.
From 10pm to 5am on November 13th & 14th and November 27th & 28th, the westbound lanes of the Gardiner will be off-limits.
Crews will complete resurfacing work, as well as jobs like making repairs to the elevated deck, and clearing catch basins.
Eastbound lanes will stay open.
"The data shows that the Gardiner is used more on the weekends than during these overnight periods so it actually made more sense to ... close the roads overnight," Tory says.
"I think this shows that we're trying to use the data we have when we're measuring these traffic flows, and trying to put people first, based on what the data says."
Tory says the changes are a trial run and if they're effective, the effort to avoid a weekend closure of the Gardiner will be duplicated in the years to come.
The city typically shuts down the Gardiner Expressway from Friday night to late in the evening on Sunday to complete its Fall maintenance regime.
It is a closure that was avoided back in 2015.
It was last year that the Mayor re-deployed maintenance work to avoid a weekend maintenance closure of the Don Valley Parkway.
Tory says the DVP will not need a weekend shutdown this year.
