An afternoon swim in a backyard pool has turned tragic.
A 79 year-old grandmother is dead and her 4 year-old granddaughter is in hospital with critical injuries, after they drowned in a back yard pool in Oakville.
Staff Sergeant Paul Davies with Halton Regional Police tells Newstalk 1010 that it was the child's mother that found the pair.
"When the mother went inside for a few minutes to prepare some lunch - prior to leaving the backyard - her mother and her daughter were actually in the shallow end of the pool. Less than 10 minutes later, the mother returned and found both of them face down in the pool."
Emergency responders were called to the home on Yarmouth Cresent just after noon today.
"CPR efforts that were continued by police and EMS were not successful and the grandmother was pronounced dead at the scene."
Sgt. Davies says the child regained consciousness and was taken to Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital, where Ornge land ambulance then transfered her to the McMaster Children's Hospital.
"Her prognosis is good, however the next couple of hours will be critical while they work on her to make sure that there's no permanent damage to her lungs."
A post-mortem on the elderly woman will be done tomorrow morning at Oakville Hospital.
