The number of drug overdoses in Toronto have gone up by 73% in the last decade.
That's why Toronto Public Health is tabling an 'Overdose Action Plan' on March 20th.
In that plan, there are a series of recommendations, including adding three supervised injection sites to Toronto, and providing a place for users to have their illicit drugs checked to see if they are contaminated.
When it comes to when we might see those supervised injection sites showing up in Toronto, it could be sooner rather than later.
"I would say months." says acting medical officer of health, Dr Barbara Yaffe. "We've had very positive feedback from the provincial and federal levels and we are working on renovation and site plans and so on."
But she says they are waiting on funding, which would have to come from the provincial government. Yaffe couldn't say if it would be something announced in the spring budget.
Yaffe says this plan just builds on stuff that is already happening in Toronto.
