NEWSTALK 1010 has learned that the Children's Breakfast Clubs at some Toronto schools, could be in jeopardy because of the job action by educational support staff.
The programs are run at 20+ schools around the city and offer a nutritious to students before they start their school day.
However, in some circumstances, support staff are needed to help set up the rooms for the programs and help clean up afterwards.
Because of the work-to-rule campaign by the CUPE members, that help is no longer available.
"This last week now, it's in jeopardy and so the principals and vice principals have been able to step up and we're going to review it at the end of the week to see if they can sustain that." says Rick Gosling, the president of the Children't Breakfast Clubs.
Thousands of kids rely on the service, and Gosling says four schools in particular are in jeopardy of shutting down.
"Each setting is different. Some locations a leader can sustain it on their own, but some settings you need two people because you serve in the gym and food is prepped in another area." says Gosling.
He adds that caretakers usually help clean up afterwards.
"We need volunteers who can help supervise the children and who can help with set up and clean up, that's the thing" admits Gosling, but it would have to be a volunteer with a police background check.
