There are exclusive new claims being made to NEWSTALK 1010 about silence in our schools after the principal at St. Michael's College waited to report an alleged sexual assault to Toronto Police.
A retired Toronto Police officer who spent three and a half years working in public and Catholic schools tells our newsroom he worked with administrators who were sometimes reluctant to share details when crimes had been committed.
David Stinson tells NEWSTALK 1010 he believes that teachers and principals were not keeping quiet for "nefarious purposes" but rather to protect the reputation of the schools.
Stinson also claims that there were some cases that were lost because administration interference led to mistakes that hurt investigations.
An unnamed NEWSTALK 1010 listener who also claims to be a former resource officer backs up the account of Stinson.
He tells NEWSTALK 1010 "yes it does occur where administrators either do not report crimes or they tried to deal with it themselves and investigated themselves without the police being involved. It was also common for private schools not to want to have any police presence at their school."
The principal at St. Mike's insists he was always going to inform police but waited so that he could identify the victim and contact their parents.
