For years, airlines have been pulling back on offering free things on their flights for all passengers, but the winds seem to be changing.
American Airlines has announced that it will join Delta Air Lines in offering free meals to the economy class on certain U.S flights.
Aviation expert Jock Williams says airlines have always been very competitive and this is the latest move by a company that wants to increase its ridership.
"You increase the perception of good service, good customer care, and that really does attract people," he says.
Competitors will be looking at American Airlines' numbers over the next month and react quickly, he says.
"If it does succeed in the United States, you can bet that it will be in Canada in very short order."
